The Dark Is Rising

Saturday, September 6, 2008

I'm a new member, from Chicago. I just wanted to say hello and I'm so glad to find more Susan Cooper fans! I reread the books every summer since I read them in 7th grade. They still scare me, I just love them so much. The movie was a disappointment, but I still feel compelled to own it. I hope we can revive this community.

Does anyone else have icons/graphics?

10:05AM - DiR/Wales icons and a wallpaper

Here thanks to a_blue_moon_cat, hi everyone! :)

A set of icons (plus 1 wallpaper) based on photos from my trip to Wales in 2002 and a couple of movie parody icons. I hope you like them, please read the notes if you're planning on using. Thanks! :)

Hi all. It's me again, the girl who has way too much time on her hands. Yesterday I went around the net gathering info on the upcoming movie, and I came up with this, highlighting differences between the book and movie. I haven't read the book in a while, though (working my way through several books right now), and wanted to know if I might have missed anything. I know that is hardly a comprehensive list, but I want it to be fuller than it currently is. Thank you for any help you could offer!

WARNING: I do have spoilers throughout the post. Just in case anyone cares.

I've found some hi-res stills from the movie, as well as some interviews with the cast and other things.

StillsCollapse )

Ian McShane (Merriman) Speaks! Highlights include how he didn't read the books because they were too dense, how the mace is Merriman's favorite weapon, and how Will has a twin that has been imprisoned by the Dark. Because saving humanity and the world as we know it isn't enough to get audiences out of their seats, you have to give the Mary Sues extra material ("But tho Will had totaly saved his bro from the Dark, he had sleft behind his sivler-eyed, blue-haired sister, but she was cool and was like, 'I'll defeat the Dark single-handedly for you anyway, bro.'")

Questions about the Dark Is Rising Will religion have a say in the movie's interpretation (i.e., will many — if not all — of the Pagan references be lost)?

12:19PM - New Poster

It seems not so long ago we had a teaser poster (did we really post that just yesterday?) and now, thanks to an anonymous comment (anyone want to claim the honor?) we have a new poster!

POSTERCollapse )

Thoughts? I think I spot Will Stanton bottom center, but if the girl to the left is The Lady, I'm... I'm not going to hyperventilate. *takes a moment.* *checks the IMDB page* I guess that's Maggie Barnes, Will Stanton's "love interest." *headdesks*

Anyone have a brighter outlook?

The poster for the movie has come out:

What do you guys think? I think the poster looks cool, and it's a pity the movie itself isn't looking the same way.

Holy cow! I was just trying to find out what was up with the Dark Is Rising movie (I recently started a blog with novel and movie adaptation of books news), and not only have they cast a large part of the movie, but they have chosen Chris Eccleston and Ian McShane! This makes my inner fangirl squee.

8:42PM - New book club!

Give me your overlooked, your long forgotten, and your dog eared. We will take care of them, discuss them, write about them and love them. How many times have you read a wonderful book, wished to discuss it or even find other works about it (fanfiction) and not been able to because the masses are not interested? This is the place for you then!
We will primarily focus on older fantasy and science fiction books or more modern books that have simply been overlooked by most people in favor of a skinny magical guy with glasses. There will be a book voted on by the members of the group, discussion of that book, and the file archives will be a place to post your creative works focusing on any literary masterpiece, whether we have discussed that book or not.
This will also be (eventually) a haven for links of all things rare and literary. We will allow more popular links also. Being the founder and moderator I am electing the book Treasure Island as our first read.
Come one come all!

Out of curiosity (I don't mean to pry)...... who's everybody's favorite character? (My favorite is Merriman (he's so awesome!), second fav is probably Barney (he's so cute!))

6:02PM - One of the biggest influences on my life!

Susan Cooper will be at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference!

I checked out her "The Dark is Rising" series from a branch of the Phoenix Public Library, I THINK after seeing her on the old TV Show "What's My Line."

4:08PM - Topics?

I've been checking for news of the movie and haven't been able to find anything new (due out in two years, though, so yay).

I thought, to try to get some more discussion going on the books, I'd ask some questions.

1) Which character is your favorite, or which one do you relate to the most, and why?

2) What is your favorite aspect of the book?

3) And this isn't really a question, but I'd love to discuss symbolism. Any ideas to start us off?

5:15PM - Innuagural post!

How sad that no one has posted anything to this community yet! I am a huge fan of the books, and I keep wondering: when are they going to make a movie of the series??? They've made a movie of nearly every other fantasy series like it...Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Narnia, Earthsea, His Dark Materials, even Ender's Game is in the works. So why not Dark is Rising?? They should! Here's to hoping. :-)
